Duties • Develop and implement high throughput DNA isolation methods suitable for traditional PCR and advanced molecular marker based platforms • Conduct analysis of traditional molecular marker and genotype by sequencing data using available software packages (unix and R) • Assist with near infrared reflectance spectroscopy assessment of dry bean for end use quality • Assist with greenhouse work, cross hybridizations and disease testing of cultivars in indoor settings • Assist with outdoor field work including: seed setup, planting, notetaking, disease nursery inoculations and harvest • Maintain accurate records of research activities, experimental results, data archives, and perform quality assurance/control • Contribute to technical reports and presentations, and the preparation of scientific publications Work environment The Harrow (Ontario) Research and Development Center is one of 20 Research Centres under Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's national network. The facilities include a modern lab/office complex to house more than 100 full-time staff and two research farms for field studies. Harrow RDC is a lead contributor in research on dry beans in Eastern Canada. The breeding program combines pure and applied science to bring forward high yielding, disease resistant cultivars to Ontario and Canadian producers. Intent of the process This process will initially be used to staff one (1) position on a temporary basis. A pool of qualified and partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures as well as various linguistic requirements. In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications) EDUCATION Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in plant pathology, plant genetics, microbiology, biochemistry, biology, or a related field or the acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience. Degree equivalency EXPERIENCE Experience in planning and executing research activities under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. Experience with traditional polymerase chain reaction, next-generation sequencing of DNA or RNA and bioinformatical analysis of sequencing data using unix and R. Experience completing plant pathology or plant breeding research.
